The Business Problem

Despite having a niche product, the brand faced significant barriers to scaling in the EU market:

  • Customizated experience: The brand needed a highly tailored user experience, but standard e-commerce templates would have made the site heavy and slow.

  • Building Local Trust: To succeed in Europe, the UX couldn't feel like a generic, imported store. It needed a secure, and localized storytelling approach to build trust with a new demographic.

  • Checkout Friction: The existing flow was disjointed, lacking local payment methods, which was directly causing high cart abandonment rates.

Behind the Scenes

Designing with Purpose

I started with deep research, User Personas, Empathy Maps, and SWOT analysis. I wanted to make sure every design choice solved a real problem or captured an opportunity, rather than just relying on aesthetic guesses.

Choosing Performance Over Shortcuts

To keep the platform fast and secure, I chose to write custom PHP and JavaScript instead of relying on dozens of third-party plugins. This significantly dropped server response times and gave us total control over the experience.

Fixing the Path to Purchase

I completely redesigned the journey from 'Add-to-Cart' to the final success screen. By streamlining the checkout and adding localized payment options, we removed the friction that was stopping international customers from buying.

Testing Before Scaling

We didn't launch blindly. We ran a strict 'Friends & Family' testing phase to get real, qualitative feedback first. This allowed me to tweak micro-interactions and fix edge cases before we opened the doors to the public.

Localized Storytelling

I centered the redesign around immersive stories and "Discovery Packs" to help new users understand the product. We also built a solid multi-language setup (Dutch, German, Spanish) to remove any language friction for European buyers.

Fast, Seamless Browsing

The product pages balance detailed information with cultural context. I optimized the navigation with a custom AJAX search and instant filtering, so users can explore the catalog instantly without frustrating load times.

The Sidebar Cart

I designed a dynamic sidebar cart to keep users in the shopping flow. It includes smart cross-selling recommendations to help increase the Average Order Value, all without slowing down the page.

A High-Trust Checkout

I modeled the checkout experience on proven, high-trust patterns similar to Shopify. The goal was to make the flow feel familiar, secure, and completely transparent regarding payment methods to prevent drop-offs.

True Mobile-First Design

Knowing the importance of mobile commerce, I built a responsive framework from the ground up. The design ensures that the brand experience and visual hierarchy remain consistent and fast, no matter what device the customer is using.
